A fully mechanical redesign of General Grievous from Star Wars, but as if he were built & engineered by the Soviet Union, and made with the intention for him to be a high-detail hero asset for games & cinematic use. To pair better with him, I also made a completely custom redesign of a typical lightsaber, also intended to be used as a main hero weapon asset.
--- Project Goals ---
- Retain Grievous’s silhouette while reimagining him through WWII/Cold War Soviet industrial themed design.
- Target hero-asset quality similar to something seen in Star Wars Battlefront II.
- Prioritize mechanical believability and functional design (while still making it look cool)
-- Technical Overview ---
Workflow: Low-poly → High-poly bake
Final Low-Poly: 61,506k tris
Weapon Low-Poly: ~21,000k tris
Texture Sets: Head/Torso 4K, Arms/Legs 2K, Weapon 2K
UVs: Fully manual unwrap (Around 190 pieces)
Software Used: Blender, Substance Painter, PureRef
--- Art Direction ---
- Blocky, utilitarian Soviet machinery aesthetic
- Inspiration from T-34 tanks, Katyusha launchers, Tsar Tank geometry, Soviet uniforms & iconography
- Fully mechanical design instead of a cyborg
- Custom combination-weapon I call the “Sickle-Saber” that can split apart into an individual hammer & sickle
- New ability to transform into a Soviet ZiS-3 76mm anti-tank gun
- Planned Additions: cape, battle damage version, accessories, flamethrowers, UE renders
--- Artist Intent ---
- My goal was to create something unorthodox, unique and memorable
- Exploring how far a redesign can push functionality while respecting the original character
